Peter DeMarzo is the John G. McDonald Professor of Finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB), where he served as Dean from 2024 to 2025. He is the founder and director of Stanford LEAD, an innovative online business program that brings Stanford GSB’s world-class curriculum to professionals globally. LEAD combines live, interactive sessions with on-demand content, peer collaboration, and personalized coaching, enabling participants to develop leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of business fundamentals—all while continuing their careers. Under DeMarzo’s leadership, LEAD has become a flagship offering in Stanford GSB’s portfolio of executive education, reflecting his commitment to expanding access to transformative business learning.
A leading scholar in corporate finance, DeMarzo’s research at Stanford focuses on bank capital regulation, sovereign and corporate debt dynamics, financial contracting, market regulation, and the optimal design of securities and executive compensation. He co-authored the widely used textbooks Corporate Finance and Fundamentals of Corporate Finance and teaches MBA and PhD courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. His work has earned best paper awards from the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and other leading finance organizations, and he has received top teaching honors at Stanford GSB. DeMarzo earned his PhD in economics and MS in operations research from Stanford, and is a fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Finance Association, as well as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
